In an effort to bring more education and information to the PoolDawg website, we’ve added not one, but two new featured columnists – WPBA touring pro Liz Ford and pool player/instructor/writer/entrpenuer Samm Diep. Most of you already know Samm, since she’s become an honorary member of our staff, complete with her own South Park character and bio on the staff page. Plus, she’s in all those “what’s in the case” videos that are all over YouTube, knows just about everyone in the billiards industry and writes a fantastic instructional blog.

Samm’s Cue Tips

And then there’s Liz Ford. She finished last season ranked #27 (although based on the new WPBA ranking system, she’ll be ranked #23 to start the 2010 season). Liz has pool on her mind 24/7 (as you can see in the picture below) and we’re really excited to have her unique insights on our site.

Liz Ford’s Dawg Training

In addition to writing for us and playing professionally on the WPBA tour, Liz was also featured on a very cool TV show called “Time Warp” on The Discovery Channel. I was able to find a clip of it on YouTube, so be sure to check it out.

Liz and Samm will both be contributing an article every month. Liz’s articles can be found in her new “Dawg Training” column and Samm’s can be found in the new “Cue Tips” column.

Let’s face it, nobody (well, almost nobody) likes to spend hours running drills. We try to make it interesting by playing the ghost, but ultimately, it gets hard to motivate yourself to practice shots and run drills for hours on end. With that in mind, we found a new game that helps make training a lot less painful (and even dare I say… fun) – The Ultimate Pool Challenge Game.

The Ultimate Pool Challenge – Only $19.95

Here’s the deal. You get a 52 card deck, each with a different shot. Different shots carry different points. The shots range from pretty easy to crazy hard. Banks, cut shots, combos, English and ball control are all part of the game. Its sort of like HORSE, but you get points for making shots instead of letters for missing shots. Check out this sample card and you’ll get an idea as to what the game is like.

Still not convinced? Come over to the website and we’ll give you four more sample cards. All you need to do is click the link on the page and print out the cards. It took everyone here at the office all of about 3 seconds to get completely hooked on this game.

As for who the creators are? Well, see for yourself.

Ok, we get asked this question all the time. ”What’s the best way for me to practice?” If you ask almost any pro player, they’ll tell you that they use a technique called “playing the ghost” in order to practice. So the next question that comes up is “What do you mean ‘playing the ghost’?”

Here are the basics to how it works. You rack and break, then take ball in hand. From there you need to run out. Run out and you win. Miss or scratch and the ghost wins. We asked the guys over at Billiards Digest if they could send us an article that might provide a little more detail and they were happy to help out. Check the link below to see the entire article about playing the ghost.
