Types of Wood

At pooldawg.com there are many different types of wood that we use in our pool cues. Here are some descriptions on what these woods are:

Rosewood- This is a that appears mainly in areas around rivers and streams. There are many different kinds of rosewood but they all look very similar. Rosewood can vary in color ranging from a pink and brown to even a purple color. There are usually different areas that contain both light and dark sections. Rosewood is a highly durable wood that also has a straight grain to it.

Rosewood (maple)- This is a second variety of rosewood. This is more of an exotic type mostly located in Eastern Asia and as far South as Australia. The color is very similar to the other rosewood but can be a bit more red and darker brown. This type of rosewood is also quite durable.

Purpleheart- This is an exotic wood that is mainly found in Central and South America. The color of purpleheart wood can very from a very dark purple to almost a brown color in some instances. The texture of this wood is can be from fine to medium and the luster is medium as well. This is an extremely durable wood that also has a wavy grain to it.

Vermillion- This is an exotic wood that is only found in the Andaman Islands and only usually found near rivers and streams. Vermillion wood is a crimson to red color and sometimes contains brown, red, and black streaks. This is a coarse wood that is very durable and very nice to look at.

Tulip Wood- This is a wood that can be found in the United States. Mostly on the East coast, but can be found near lakes in the mid-west.  This is a moderately brown wood.

Cocobolo- This wood is mainly found in Central America as well as Southern Mexico. The colors of cocobolo wood are going to be mainly a dark burnt orange color with black stripes in it. This usually has a straight grain to it and is very durable.

Rock Maple- This is a wood that can be found nearly everywhere in the United States East of the great lakes and even parts of southern Canada. The most common area this wood is found is in New England. This kind of maple wood has the same coloring as other maples however, it is both more durable and fire resistant than other species.

Ebony-  This wood can be found mostly in the Pacific regions around Malaysia and Indonesia. This is typically a very dark brown to black wood that can have some lighter striping in it. This is also a very lustrous wood that can that a straight to curved grain and is durable to the elements.

All of these woods can be found on many of the cues at pooldawg.com They can be what the cue is made of, like Rock Maple or they can be used to create beautiful inlays on a cue stick. Either way you will find all of the finest woods on our website.
